About the Daufuskie Island Foundation

Amelia Stevens-Benskin, President
& Ervin Simmons, VP

Vision: To preserve Fuskie's unique heritage.

Purpose: In 1976 the late Ms. Francis Jones, teacher and principal of Mary Fields School, organized Daufuskie Day. This is what inspired us to keep Daufuskie a part of our history! The purpose then and now remains a mechanism so the native gullah culture will not be forgotten, but a legacy preserved and celebrated. The opportunity has been given to share our unique culture with visitors from around the world, as well as with relatives and friends of native gullah islanders.

Mission: Daufuskie Island Foundation's mission is to assist native Daufuskie Islanders with economic development opportunities, cultural and land preservation, as well as the planning of the annual
Daufuskie Day Celebration.

The Board: (All board members are native Daufuskie Islanders!) President, Amelia Stevens-Benskin / Vice President, Ervin Simmons / Secretary, Mary Simmons / Treasurers, Mary Simmons, Joann Smith, Georgia Smith / Board Members, Henrietta Wiley, Henry Simmons
